Ouachita River

The Ouachita River runs through the Ouachita Mountains. Two dams interrupt its flow near the resort town of Hot Springs to form lakes Hamilton and Catherine. Below Lake Catherine, the stream travels south past Arkadelphia before leaving the Ouachita Mountain region and entering the West Gulf Coastal Plain, also known in Arkansas as the Timberlands region.

Crystal Mining

Jim Coleman Crystal Mines, Inc. has been family owned and operated since 1963. It is the largest producer of natural Arkansas Quartz in the United States. The mine is open to the public year round, and the Rock Shop offers a unique selection of gifts all its own. Along with the Quartz that they mine, Jim Coleman Crystal Mines offers Incite from Poland, Amethyst from Brazil, spheres made from Angelite, Amethyst, Labradorite, Quartz and Rose Quartz, metaphysical stones, fossils, jewelry, glassware, and various other minerals and specimens from around the world.

During the daily mining, crystals are brought up in half-bushel baskets. Each basket contains approximately 30 - 40 pounds of dirty quartz crystals and mining dirt (weight varies with each basket), and they are not picked for quality. There are points and clusters in these baskets. They can be purchased directly or sent to customers from the mine. As they have no way of knowing what is inside, it is like buying a mystery grab bag. These bags of crystal findings are popular items and are shipped both nationally and internationally.

Plan to visit Jim Coleman Crystal Mines and dig for your own crystal “goodies,” or visit the Rock Shop and browse the large selection of unique items made from a wide variety of minerals and specimens from around the world.
